Lifestyle Newborn
I have been photographing newborns for years, over a decade actually. I started out by photographing newborns at hospitals, fresh 48 style. These were a mix of lifestyle and posed photos and it seems I’m getting back to my roots after this session.
This newborn session was the first session I have done at my new location after many renovations were made, the main one that clients could see was the flooring! Now that the area was pretty, I planned to utilize it. I loved the feel of not having to contain clients to the backdrop. I was able to be way more creative finding shots and loved using natural light again. Being in a real environment felt way more comfortable to me. I still was able to get backdrop images but I just felt pulled to the lifestyle ones, both while editing but also loved the creative freedom while shooting.
This session really inspired me to pull the trigger on my new lifestyle area and in turn, plotting out the new studio. It helped me figure out all I wanted my studio to include. Yes, a backdrop area and certainly my newborn posing tools/drops, but also more lifestyle areas for newborns and families. Lovely textured blankets, real life onesies not just super fancy outfits, mom and dad bonding with baby on the bed. Brings me back to those decade old hospital sessions, we would pose in hospital sheets right there on the bed by moms feet. I really did get back to my roots after this, I’ve spent years trying to fit my photography in a box. Following what I think everyone wants. I realized there’s no point unless I stay true to myself and follow my passions, that’s what life is about after all!
Funny how one session can alter your outlook, since this session took place I have found more joy in my photography. I look forward to creative shoots, have loved seeing kids and families be themselves, capturing heartfelt moments. Yes, I absolutely still plan on using adorable bonnets and wraps for newborn sessions! Just a really nice combination of everything. Having lifestyle be my base to all sessions will also help immensely with newborn session timing. A fully posed session can easily go well over 3 hours and if baby is unsettled it can be very hard to get images. With the main focus being real life moments, I can happily capture baby being wide awake, being soothed by mom and dad, being played with by siblings, its all beautiful!
